Pterygium
A pterygium (plural pterygia) is a fleshy growth that occurs on the surface of the cornea. It is associated with excessive sun exposure of the course of an individuals lifetime or exposure to environments with a high level of irritants and particulate matter in the air. Common professions and activities associated with pterygia are skiing, surfing, roofers, construction workers, farmers, and many more. Using 100 % UV protection when in the sun is essential to avoiding pterygia or preventing the further growth of pterygia. The common early symptoms are redness in the inner corner of the eye, foreign body sensation, itching. Dry eye syndrome can make these symptoms worst. Therefore, Artificial tears are an essential part of treatment. Later symptoms can be blurred vision. At this point, surgical removal may be necessary.
